Another deal played by Tom Slater, this time from the National Inter County League Final A Division won in July by Manchester for the second year running.
Unusually declarer played in the opponents first bid suit.

West led the spade queen and spades were continued until South ruffed the third round.   Tom now played a heart to the queen, ace of hearts and a heart ruff.  Then a club was won by West and a club returned, won by the king and another heart off table which East trumped with the diamond eight and South over ruffed with the diamond ten.   The end position is as below.

Now when South played a low diamond, West won with the queen and was endplayed.  To defeat this contract East had to find the double dummy defence of overtaking the second spade and playing a trump through, this prevents South from shortening his trumps to the same length as West.
