It is good to see that the Manchester University Bridge Club is currently thriving with regular meetings on a Wednesday afternoon supervised by Nicholas Greer.  Students play (and work) at Manchester Bridge Club and also compete in MCBA competitions.  The deal above is from the university duplicate.

(1) Weak jump overcall, could be a five card suit

West leads the diamond queen, East overtakes with the king how do you play?

Solution and analysis

You elect to duck the first trick and East returns the diamond ten with West following.  You can count three spade tricks, a diamond trick and two club tricks, so you need three heart tricks without letting East gain the lead.  Win the second diamond and lead a heart towards the king, then take the spade finesse which loses.  Win the black suit return and play another heart.  If West plays the queen duck, otherwise win the ace and play another heart hoping that West held Qxx originally.  This is an example of an avoidance play.  Note that if you hold up until the third round of diamonds, then West can defeat the contract by discarding the heart queen.  Similarly if the diamonds were 6-1 originally then West could have discarded the heart queen.
