This deal is a
defensive problem from the annual Chester Bowl charity event held at
Deva Bridge Club every October.
Partner leads the king diamonds and switches to the three of clubs to the queen and ace. Declarer now plays the spade king, overtaking with the ace then cashes the spade queen throwing a club and then leads a third spade from dummy. How do you defend and why? Solution Declarer appears to
have three clubs, so if we don't trump this trick he will discard his
last club and we will need partner to hold the singleton heart king to
hold this to ten tricks. If we trump with the jack, declarer will
overtrump and ruff a diamond in dummy to lead a fourth spade,
discarding his final club while we ruff with the ace. Now if
partner holds either the singleton king or queen of trumps we will hold
the contract to ten tricks.
