Board 40 session 1
Tollemache qualifier Nov 2018.
John Hassett and John Holland were Manchester's best pair by a long way in the Tollemache qualifier last month. This deal, nicely played by John Hassett helped Manchester to qualify for the finals. West led a club, John won with the ace and then discarded a club on the top spades. He then played a heart from dummy and East won the ace and returned a club. John ruffed high and played a diamond to the queen and a diamond to hand. The four one trump break was awkward, but John was able to play hearts until West trumped, overruffed in dummy. Then John drew trumps ending in hand and cashed his winning hearts. Nicely played, but if East ducks the first heart when lead from the table it is more difficult; declarer can still get home by cross ruffing as West cannot overruff the nine of diamonds. Thanks to John
Holland for reporting this deal
