This
deal from the Swiss Teams at Llangollen was bid by Peter
Foster (West) and John Roberts (East).
After
the game forcing two diamonds response, three hearts set the
suit, followed by a couple of cue bids and key card
Blackwood. Five spades was a grand slam try, accepted
by East. The ten of hearts was led and prospects
looked bleak with only twelve top tricks.
John
drew trumps and cashed two top diamonds. Disappointed that
the queen and jack were not doubleton he came back to hand
with the ace of clubs and ran the trumps.
The
five card ending was as below.
When
John played the penultimate trump South erred by discarding
the club ten, this set up a double squeeze. John
discarded the club eight from dummy and North threw the
queen of clubs. Now the last heart squeezes South out
of a spade and when dummy discards the club jack North is
squeezed between clubs and spades. At the other table
Peter Jones led a club against seven hearts and defended
accurately from there on to beat the contract and score 20
IMPs.
