A
deal from a Manchester online league match.
Dealer W Game All.
You
reach three hearts on the above auction.
West
leads the queen of clubs, you cover and East wins
with the ace and then cashes the ten of clubs,
followed by the king of spades and the ten of spades
to West's queen. West now switches to the
diamond queen. You clearly are not going to
make this contract but how should you play to
minimise your losses?
Solution If the diamonds break three-three, so long as the trumps behave you will be one off. However if the diamonds are four-two you can ruff a diamond successfully in dummy so long as the hand with the doubleton diamond also has a doubleton heart. To do this you need to duck the diamond queen, win the next trick, cash two top hearts and then ruff a diamond in dummy. This line works in practice as West has a 4225 distribution. The
