Another
deal from a Bramhall & Cheadle duplicate.
You
lead the diamond two against three notrump, declarer
plays the jack from dummy, four and three from
partner and declarer.
Declarer
now plays a low spade, seven from partner, nine from
declarer.
How
do you defend?
Solution
If
you win this trick declarer has two entries to
dummy to set up and enjoy the spades.
However, if you duck then declarer eventually
will be held to ten tricks if you discard
carefully on the clubs. So, despite your
unfortunate lead (a heart would probably hold
declarer to nine tricks), you beat all the
pairs who defended four spades which easily
made eleven tricks.
