This
deal is from the Irish Swiss Teams in January. One
notrump was 12-14.

your defence.

Your
best chance is to find partner with five hearts to
the ace and an entry. But partner is limited
to holding about one jack outside hearts.
Declarer will need to make tricks in diamonds, so
play partner for the jack of diamonds and discard
your king of diamonds on the third heart.
This
brilliant defence was missed by the players at both
tables.
However,
declarer still has to play carefully to make three
notrump.
David
Barton played a diamond to the queen and then a
spade to the king followed by a second
diamond. When the king appeared he ducked and
now was home with four diamond tricks, three spades
a club and a heart.
