This
suit combination came up recently.
You have plenty of entries to both hands, how do you play for four tricks? And
here is a minor change, does holding the eight make a
difference to how the suit should be played?
Solution If the suit is 3-3 then running the queen works, playing low to the nine gains when East has 10xxx or K10xx, but loses against 10xx with West and Kxx with East. Low to the nine makes four tricks 49% of the time. Holding the eight does make a difference. Now it is correct to lead the queen. If West covers the queen with the king then run the nine next. If the queen loses to East's king then cash the ace and jack hoping the ten drops. Holding the eight makes a huge difference, now you will make four tricks 70% of the time. |
