This
deal from the Board a Match event at the European
Open in Poznan featured two of Manchester's top
players.
John
Holland received the eight of spades lead to the ten
and ace. He then cashed all the spades
throwing a diamond and ducked a club. West
played a diamond to the queen. East then
played a heart. John won this and cashed his
club tricks.
The
end position was as below with East still to
discard. This is a rare criss-cross squeeze,
whichever red suit East discards from declarer can
cash the ace of that suit, cross to the other ace
and cash the winner.
In
the other room Michael Byrne was declarer, he
received the same lead. He cashed two spades
then ran the ten of diamonds. East returned a
club which Michael ducked. West could now
break up the squeeze by returning a diamond, but
couldn't read the club position and returned another
club. So Michael cashed his black suit winners
to reach the same end position as John to make
eleven tricks and tie the board.
Thanks
to John Holland for reporting this deal
