Note
East's balancing double of two hearts
non-vulnerable. It is well worth balancing in
these sort of situations, if they can make two
hearts then a part score your way is unlikely to be
more than two down (and they rarely double) and
sometimes they push on to three hearts, which may or
may not make, but if it doesn't you have improved
your score. Here the hoped for 4-4 spade fit
didn't materialise and West was left to toil in
three clubs. Neither opponent had a reason to
double this forlorn contract and it went two off
losing three club and three diamond tricks.
However this was a better score than two hearts
which makes easily and can make an overtrick if
declarer takes the backward finesse in diamonds.
(Lead the jack and if covered finesse the ten next).
Although
it is difficult for declarer to get the diamonds
right, the defence know the diamond position and can
take three diamond tricks by South leading the jack,
called a surround play when the defence execute it.
