North
has a tricky call over West's weak two in
spades. Two notrump, three hearts and double
are all worth consideration. North chose three
hearts, which was the popular choice in the event,
causing no further bidding. An internet poll
on Bridge Winners was virtually a tie between three
hearts and two notrump. When West switched to
a trump at trick two, with the trumps breaking,
declarer made an easy ten tricks. A second
high spade at trick two from West should hold
declarer to nine tricks.
The
interesting play is in three notrump. On the
jack of spades lead West must duck to preserve
communications. North cannot afford to win the
first trick as there are only eight tricks before
the defence gets in to cash spades, so North also
ducks. If West perseveres with spades then
North can win and make by playing East for the ace
of clubs. So West must switch to a club.
East clears the clubs and now there are only eight
tricks for declarer as there is no spade trick for
declarer yet.
