A
deal from the Great Northern Swiss Pairs held in
October.
South
had an interesting call to make at his second
turn. Partner's one notrump call suggests that
North South have the majority of the high card
points. The choice of double was intended to
show a good hand but no clear direction.
Fortunately North was on the same wavelength and
decided that the 5-2 heart fit was as good as any.
West
led a diamond, ducked to East's king. The
queen of spades went to the ace and West played a
slightly obscure nine of spades for East to
ruff. A second diamond went to the
queen. With ruffs being threatened South
bashed out ace and another heart, pleased to see the
heart king and jack appear. South was able to
ruff a third diamond high, draw trumps and discard
the losing clubs on dummy's jack and seven of
spades, emerging with nine tricks.
