A
deal from the Great Northern Swiss Pairs held in
October.
Against
North's game East led the heart jack, won in
dummy. Declarer, Heather Dhondy, now played a
club to West's queen and the ace, followed by
another club to West's king.
To
beat the contract now West has to lead a diamond to
East's king, followed by a second diamond won by
West. Now a third diamond promotes a trump
trick for East. If West tries to cash the ace
of diamonds at trick four East has to hope that West
has the diamond queen and unblock the king so that
West can continue diamonds profitably. This
defence proved difficult to find, and many pairs
played in three spades, so making game scored very
well.
