A
deal from the Great Northern Swiss Pairs held in
October. North's three spade call was a
splinter agreeing hearts.
Deals
where both sides can make a lot of tricks often lead
to exciting auctions and difficult decisions at a
high level which are not possible to get right all
of the time.
Here
North South can make eleven tricks in hearts and
East West ten in spades. So what went wrong
for North South? South's bid of five hearts
was ill advised. With little more than a
minimum opening bid pass seems more sensible.
Now North will undoubtedly compete to five hearts
but will take the chance of defending five spades
rather than trying for slam.
