Manchester One Day
Sunday April 21st 2013
For the first time ever we sold out the tournament.  56 players entered and settled down to a busy day of backgammon and food.  It was pleasing to see some new young entrants; Eli Nixey aged seven, being the youngest, who earned the largest cheer of the day when he beat Irving Czechowicz in the first round of the qualifying.  Unusually there were four parent and child combinations among the entrants - four fathers, three sons and one daughter.  The  entrants played 5 rounds of 5 point matches starting at 11 a.m. to qualify for the KO stage.  16 qualified for the main knockout and the other 40 played in the consolation.

This year was a clean sweep for Manchester based players who won all four of the competitions.  First time entrant Abdel Khadorie had an excellent day winning the main and the one point, beating last year's runner up Alastair Woods in the main, with John Ross and Rodney Lighton being the losing semi-finalists.  The consolation was the last event to finish at 10 pm with last year's main winner George Hall beating Ian Shimwell.   In the Last Chance 14 year old Adam Forshaw (who had lost all his matches up to then) was delighted to win, beating Lee Gorton who has returned to Manchester after an absence of several years.

Thanks to Irving Czechowicz, Annette Jones, Kevin Jones and Lorraine Lighton for directing, scoring, administration and catering.  Also to entrants for helping to set up and to Manchester Bridge Club for hosting the event.
