One Day Tournament 29th March On a lovely spring
day (well continual rain passes for a lovely spring day in
Manchester), with entrants from Didsbury to Dubai and ranging in
age from nine to seventy plus, 54 players enjoyed a full day of
backgammon, eating and socialising.
The event ran
smoothly with everyone remembering that the clocks went forward.
Participants played five 5 point matches in
the late morning/afternoon followed by a Main KO final for the top 16
and a Consolation KO for the remainder. There was also a last
chance KO for those who lost early in the Main and Consolation finals
and a 1 point KO which ran throughout the day.
Rob Perry from the
Midlands survived being 6-0 down (to 7) against Kevin Jones in the semi
final and then beat Ron Havenhand in the Main final. The
consolation event was won by George Hall who beat Brian Lever a few
days later after the final was postponed. The last chance event
was a local
affair, with Irving Czechowicz winning a three point match on a four
cube in one game against Maurice Ekpenyong. Marc Turner of
Coventry won the 1 point KO against Kevin Jones. However, the
star of the day was undoubtedly nine year old Eli Nixey who qualified
for the main final by winning three of his five qualifying matches and
then his first KO match before eventually losing in the quarter finals.
Excellent buffets were provided for lunch and tea. Thanks to Lorraine Lighton for the tea (lunch was provided by a catering firm) and to Irving Czechowicz and Kevin Jones for directing on the day. Also to Annette Jones for scoring and Rodney and Lorraine Lighton for administration, to club members for helping set up the room and clearing up and to Manchester Bridge club for hosting the event.
Alan
Greenwood
We are sorry to
report the death of Alan Greenwood of Bolton on 7th February at the age
of 83.
Alan was an occasional and very welcome visitor to Manchester
events. It was always a pleasure to see him; he loved the
game. His most notable achievement in our tournaments was winning
the one pointer at the Manchester 1 day in 2006, where he also reached
the semi-final of the consolation.
