Player of the Year

Player of the Year Rules (2023-2024)

General
  • Manchester full members only
  • Prizes for Expert and Non-Expert categories.
  • Expert is NGS rating Q and above just before the Green Point Swiss Teams (usually in July).
  • Non-Expert is NGS rating J or below.  Players may opt out of competing in the non-expert category.
  • To be eligible for non-expert points both players in a pairs event must be non-expert,
  •             for a teams event 3 out of 4 (or 4 out of 5 or 6) or 6 out of 8 must be non-expert.
  • In the Gazette (Teams of Eight) the team average must be J or below to be eligible for non-expert points.
  • Season to start with the Green Point Swiss Teams event.
  • Point awards and categories to be reviewed each year in light of experience.
  • Points for the league will be awarded to players who play 50%+ of matches.

Equal places will each get same number of higher points e.g. 2nd= both get 9 points in Ben Franks.

Point awards for Experts

If non-Manchester pairs/teams are placed their points are awarded but not recorded
  • Green point 1 day pairs 10 for first down to 1 for tenth
  • Green point 1 day teams 10 for first down to 1 for tenth
  • Ben Franks 10 for first down to 1 for tenth
  • Congress pairs 10 for first down to 1 for tenth
  • Congress Teams A final 10 for first, 8 for second down to 2 for fifth
  • Congress Teams B final 5 for first, 3 for second, 1 for third
  • Congress Teams C final 3 for first, 2 for second, 1 for third
  • Gazette 6 for first, 4 for second, 2 for third (or 4 for first, 2 for second if fewer than 6 teams enter)
  • Higson Cup final 8 for first, 6 for second down to 2 for fourth
  • Higson Plate final 6 for first, 4 for second, 2 for third
  • League division 1 10 for first, 8 for second down to 2 for fifth
  • League division 2 8 for first, 6 for second down to 2 for fourth
  • League division 3 6 for first, 4 for second, 2 for third
  • Goldstone 6 for winners, 4 for losing finalists, 2 for losing semi-finalists (or 4 for winners, 2 for losing finalists if 8 or fewer enter)
Point awards for non-experts

Non-Manchester pairs/teams are ignored in the non-expert category

For events with ranking lists, 5 points for top ranked down to 1 point for 5th placed non-experts
This will apply to the following events-
Ben Franks
Congress Pairs
Congress Teams (1 list for all three finals)
Higson Finals (1 list for both finals)
League (1 list for all divisions)
GP Pairs
GP Teams

For the Gazette a reduced scale will apply depending on the number of eligible non-expert teams e.g. 3/2/1 if three teams are eligible, 2/1 if two teams eligible etc.
For the Goldstone eligible teams will get 1 point for the first match, 2 points for each subsequent match won.

The point scoring system has been chosen to make each competition have roughly equal standing and to make the keeping of the scores not too onerous.
